Thomas Ona Figures
90. The two figures here are in the most incredible, original condition. They look like they have been kept in a box since the day they were purchased? even the ‘mothers’ ear ornaments are intact and the painted highlights are unoxidised and vibrant.
Thomas Ona (1900 – 1952) was born in Ijebu Ode and moved to Lagos where he made many wood carvings mainly for sale to British Colonialists and visiting travellers during the early part of the 20th Century. He appears to have been influenced by the societal characters that he was surrounded by and his carvings include tribal as well as colonial representations. Onas work has real identity and easily recognisable, making him a rare identifiable African artist form first half of the 20th century, the majority of which ,sadly remain anonymous. Many examples of his work is now held in Museums the world over.
