Rare Club
147. A very rare club possibly from New Hanover island or New Ireland in the Bismarck archipelago. This club fits into the corpus of long, striking weapons from this area but is larger than most from New Ireland (which are almost always decorated and round in section) This is elliptical in section, very precise and has the interesting details of a waisted grip and a small carved-out oval to the end of the butt, that looks like it held an inlay. There is another in the British Museum that has a straight, sided grip museum number Oc,+.2377.
19th century.
117cm long.
