Nootka Figure
12. A small treasure from the North West Coast of Canada. Stylistically this figure belongs to a group collected in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The British Museum has several collected by Cook, a famous bowl having the same “arched” arms as the infant on this maternity figure. The arm on the mother has been lost but probably in its cultural life as the break has a similar patina as the rest of the figure. The colour (patina) could not be more pleasing, a rich, dark, glossy surface from years of handling. 18th/19th century.
Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) Vancouver island.
14cm tall.
