Ngoni Shield

93. A possibly unique Ngoni shield dating to the 19th century.

At first glance this shield would appear to be Zulu. The Ngoni have ancestral connections to the Nguni speaking peoples further South and have retained many of their crafts and customs. Indeed part of their success following the initial migration around 1820, was due to the adoption of Zulu (their enemies) military methods.

A small shield with a very unusual design, maybe made for dance or even an insignia of rank.

70cm x 21cm.
