Congo Sceptre

18. A fine ‘Mvwala’ status sceptre. Unusually the small power figure is holding two infants, probably twins. The maternity figure is well known amongst the Yombe but depictions of twins are very rare. This staff is finer than many of the other extant examples. An expressive carving and dating to the 19th century. Black pigment and aged patina. Some age cracks and a piece missing from one shoulder (please see the images)

60cm long. The figure is 11cm tall.

D.R.C. Yombe people.

Ex U.K. private collection.
