Kashmiri Table
Folding Table.
Sold.
19th century.
67cm x 33cm x 31cm.
A very similar example in the Victoria and Albert museum has the description “Kashmir, where this table was made, was renowned for its painted and papier-mâché wares. However, the design is a deliberate copy of a Tibetan folding table (chogtse). Furniture makers in Kashmir copied the form from the 1850s, principally to meet the demand for Tibetan items among British tourists in the area. The table is decorated with token interpretations of Chinese symbols”
